Alesund, Norway: Norway’s Fairytale Coastal Town

Discover charming Alesund, Norway – a place that looks like it inspired Frozen’s Arendelle! Known for its stunning coastal scenery, Alesund is the gateway to the breathtaking Geirangerfjord and a great base for exploring the Sunnmøre Alps and local wildlife. After a devastating fire in 1904, the city was rebuilt with beautiful Art Nouveau architecture featuring unique turrets and pastel buildings along scenic canals. We also visited the Sunnmøre Museum, a preserved community of Medieval houses that offered a lovely glimpse into early Norwegian life. Alesund truly showcases the beauty and history of Norway.

My favorite port was Alesund Norway. Even before stepping off the ship we could see how idyllic and charming this port was – it looked like it was the inspiration for Frozen’s Arendelle! Ålesund in Norway is known for breathtaking coastal scenery from the base of a charming town. Alesund also serves as the gateway to the stunning Geirangerfjord. Plus, it’s a fantastic base for exploring the nearby Sunnmøre Alps and spotting local wildlife.

The city itself was rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1904 destroyed almost the entire town center. Back then the homes were all built out of wood and tucked close together. Luckily the Norweigan king loved the city and invested in rebuilding it in an Art Nouveau architecture with unique turrets and pastel-hued buildings – all along picturesque canals. But they are no longer the all wood houses.

Not all Norweigan Cruises stop in the port of Alesund, but we are so glad ours did. It is the prettiest port that oozes charm and beauty. While you will be able to enjoy so much beauty from all the different viewpoints onboard your ship, this is a great port to jump on a port adventure to explore all the area has to offer more in depth.

In case you have not been following along all our Norweigan Cruise Ports I’ll remind you that the weather changes a LOT in Norway. You can have all 4 seaons in one day. With the time of year cruise ships visit Norway you most likely wont have snow, but do expect rain. It rained every day we were in Norway. However, it doesn’t rain non-stop all day. There were periods of beautiful sunshine peaking through dramatic clouds – so just bring a poncho, rain coat, umbrella, and waterproof shoes to make sure you are ready to explore this beautiful city no matter the weather.  Layering is also a good idea as it can be windy and cold, or pleasant in jeans and a t-shirt.

Here are 13 things you should definitely consider doing while you’re in Ålesund, ensuring an unforgettable experience.

• Take a stroll to Fjellstua for an unforgettable view of Ålesund! The downtown area is quite walkable, and it’s just a short climb of 418 steps from the city park to reach this stunning viewpoint.
• Explore the Art Nouveau architecture. Ålesund is famous for its unique architectural style that emerged after a devastating fire in 1904. Stroll through the streets to admire the intricate details and vibrant colors of the buildings that define the town’s charm.
• Visit the Jugendstilsenteret (Art Nouveau Center). Delve deeper into the town’s architectural heritage at this dedicated museum. Learn about the art nouveau movement and its impact on Ålesund, as well as the stories behind some of the town’s most iconic buildings.
• Take a hike up Aksla viewpoint. For some of the best panoramic views of Ålesund and its surrounding islands, hike to Aksla. The trail features several viewpoints, and at the top, you’ll find a lookout point that offers breathtaking vistas.
• Discover the underwater world at Ålesund Aquarium. This family-friendly attraction showcases the diverse marine life of the region. Walk through the aquarium’s tunnels and observe everything from local fish to fascinating sea creatures.
• Enjoy the local cuisine. Ålesund is known for its seafood, so be sure to try some fresh fish dishes at local restaurants. Whether it’s a cozy café or a fine dining establishment, savoring the flavors of the sea is a must.
• Visit the Sunnmøre Museum. This open-air museum is dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of the Sunnmøre region. You can explore historical buildings, traditional Norwegian architecture, and learn about the area’s maritime history.
• Explore the charming town center. Ålesund has a vibrant town center with shops, cafés, and galleries. Take some time to wander the streets, pop into the local boutiques, and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the town.
• Take in the Midnight Sun or Northern Lights. Depending on the time of year, Ålesund offers unique natural phenomena. In summer, witness the Midnight Sun, where the sun doesn’t set, providing endless daylight. In winter, if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the stunning Northern Lights.
• Cruise through Hjørundfjorden and Øye – Hjørundfjorden is considered one of the most beautiful fjords.
• Gondola Ride to Stranda Mountain and Scenic Norway – Take a short ferry ride over the fjord before you ascend Mount Stranda via a gondola. Enjoy the view from the top where you can see Jostedal Glacier and the greater area of Geirangerfjord protected by UNESCO.
• Hike through breathtaking Sugarlump Mountain where you will marvel at the stunning views over the city of Ålesund, onto Borgundfjord, and further inland to the picturesque Sunnm Mountains.
• Tours of Giske & Godøy – Take in the panoramic views of the sea and fishing town town from the charming red-and-white wooden lighthouse.
• Explore Arctic History – Explore the M/S Polarstar, a historic vessel built in 1948 for Arctic hunting and expeditions. This iconic ship has been saved from scrapping not once, but twice, and now enjoys protected status as a beloved piece of Norwegian heritage. Afterward, immerse yourself in the rich history of polar exploration at the Ishavsmuseet Arctic Museum, where 150 years of fascinating tales come to life. Finally, step aboard the Aarvak, Norway’s oldest seal-hunting ship, built in 1912, and discover its significant role in the story of polar history.

For our limited time in Alesund we opted for the Alesund Highlights tour. We started by boarding a comfy bus for a mini tour of the city on the way out of the city.  Our tour guide pointed out as we passed by the fisherman’s port, famous for open-sea fishing as well as herring and cod processing. Then we continue to Borgundfjord, passing the modern neighborhoods and the old trading center. Next, you will drive through one of Norway’s underwater tunnels as you make your way to the Island of Giske where you will have a photo stop at the church.  Honestly, other than the view of the scenery, this stop felt like a waste. The church seemed uninportant and unremarkable. The view was pretty, but there are lots of prettier vistas. There are restrooms right next to the church if you need to use the facilities.

Then we headed to the real reason we booked the tour – the Sunnmøre Museum.  This abolutely charming outdoor museum features more than 50 well-preserved buildings, capturing life in this Norwegian seaport town from the Middle Ages through the 20th century.

You will have about 75 minutes to wander through the beautiful setting to explore what life looked like in historical Norway. The guide will give you a map so you can know what explore, but the homes also feature a white plaque at the front so you know what you are seeing.

Many of the homes can seen from the inside as well, with furniture and items from the period of history they came from!

There is a traditional Borgund stone church dating back to 1250, old school houses, farm houses, food storage buildings, very simple homes, and when you get to the 1800s the homes get a little more elaborate. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting this museum and highly recommend it to anyone who visits Alesund! What a great way to get a glimpse into the history of Norway with such a fun, pretty, and visual way!

You will also see a vast boat collection, some of which are replicas of Viking ships. There are restrooms on site in the visitor center, a tiny cafe, and an even tinier gift shop – you don’t need to save any time to shop!

Don’t miss a walk to the heart of Ålesund – Apotekertorget, known as Pharmacy Square. Nestled right by the beautiful Brosundet canal, this vibrant square showcases the charm of the city on one side, while the other features picturesque homes that add to the area’s unique character. One of the highlights of Apotekertorget is the iconic bronze statue of Fiskergutten, or The Fisher Boy, created by artist Knut Skinnarland in 1967. This powerful piece pays tribute to the city’s rich fishing heritage and the hardworking youth who contribute to it. Just a stone’s throw away lies another gem, Sildekona, or The Herring Woman, sculpted by Bjørn Tore Skjølsvik. This statue celebrates the essential role of women in the fishing industry, reflecting the deep connections between the community and its maritime roots.

Fun Fact: Our guide told us the benches in alesund have currency running through them so that in the winter they are warm and snow free for residents to sit on!

Apotekertorget

At this port you walk off and are immediately  downtown ready to explore. I highly recommend after your tour you take a couple minutes to wander the area to explore the square further, grab some local food, or stop at one of the readily available souvenir shops. This was the best place to find souvenirs during our Norway cruise!

Norweigan Fjord Cruise

As with all ports on your Norweigan Fjords cruise, I highly recommend you watch the boat arrive and depart the port to get breathtaking views of the fjord, charming villages, mountains, wildlife, and more! Depending on the time of year you may see whales, the Northern Lights, and breathtaking sunsets!
