Australia Weather
In Australia, the seasons are opposite to those in North America. While the U.S. and Canada experience winter from December to February, Australia enjoys its summer during these months. Conversely, when North America welcomes summer in June through August, Australia is experiencing winter. While the tempearture can vary in different parts of Australia just like it varies from Florida to New York, here is a brief look at what to expect each month in Australia:
- January is the heart of summer, with many regions enjoying warm temperatures and sunny days. Outdoor activities and beach trips are quite popular.
- February continues the summer vibe, often remaining hot, with occasional storms as the wet season begins in the northern parts of the country.
- March marks the start of autumn, which brings cooler days and beautiful fall foliage, especially in southern regions.
- April sees temperatures dropping further, with crisp days and colorful landscapes as nature transitions.
- May is fully autumn, offering mild conditions and a perfect time for outdoor adventures before winter sets in.
- June welcomes winter in Australia. The southern areas experience cooler weather, while the north remains warm and tropical, ideal for exploring the Great Barrier Reef.
- July is the coldest month in the southern regions, with cooler temperatures and even snowfall in certain areas like the Victorian Alps.
- August is still winter, but days start to warm up gradually, making it a great time for winter sports in the south and visiting tropical destinations in the north.
- September ushers in spring, with blooming flowers and increasingly warmer temperatures, making it a joyful time for nature lovers.
- October continues to warm up as spring progresses, often marked by lovely sun-kissed days and outdoor festivals.
- November signals the arrival of summer once more, with temperatures rising and the holiday season approaching.
- December is the official start of summer, filling the beaches with sun-seekers and festive holiday celebrations.
👉 I suggest visiting in May or early June for ideal weather that is comfortable for traveling, while still giving you the warmth in the Great Barrier Reef. In addition, traveling in late Autumn / Early winter means lower crowds and cheaper pricing!

Australia Trip Cost
You can scale a trip to Australia up and down depending on the type of accomidations, cost of your meals, how many tours you do, and the time of year you visit. I suggest going in value season May/June to stretch your money as much as possible. Try to book international air fare at least 8 months early to maximize a good deal. Make sure when booking airfare you search nearby maor cities to get a deal. For example we drove to Nashville and flew through Monreal on Air Canada which saves us almost 50% off other rates. Get creative and research one way tickets, or open jaw / multi-city trips.
Currently the US dollar is stronger than the Aussie Dollar (AUS). $1 US is $1.42 AUS, but that changes daily so keep that in mind. We found lodging to be slightly more affordable than America, but food was at least as expensive as the USA if not a little higher.
You will love that Australia is a NO TIP country which will save you money and makes it less stressful trying to figure out the apporpriate amount to tip everywhere.

I suggest for in country flights you look at Jetstar. They are a reliable, efficient, and main stream budget airline we had a great experience with. Make sure you understand you will need to pay for seat assignment together (we choose ones at the back of the plane as they are the most economical. Turns out Jetstar loads and unloads planes in the front and rear doors so our back of the plane seats were ideal! Other than pre-boards and first class, it is a free for all so you have get on when everyone else does; surprisingly there were no issues with overhead bin space. Remember that food and drinks are not included in your base fare, just bring something on the plane with you and save. Finally, they are VERY strict with the weight of your luggage and carry on. So I suggest getting a covenient travel hand scale to check our luggage as overpriced luggage is ridiculously expensive. Your checked bag needs to be 20kg (44 pounds) and your included carry on needs fit under the seat in front of you and weight less than 7kg (15 pounds).
👉 We packed in 4 suitcases for our family of 8! Having less luggage allowed us to travel cheaper and more effeciently. If we can do 2 weeks in Australia with our large family of 8 in four suitcases – so can you! We needed swimsuits, shorts, and flip flops for the Great Barrier Reef and sweatshirts, light coats, and warm hats for the Outback. But other than that we kept it light, anything you need as you go you can find and easily buy in Australia. We each had a small backpack with a change of clothes, snacks, umbrella, and personal entertainment for our flights.
