Maloy Norway

On our recent Disney Cruise Line Norway trip we stopped in the beautiful port of Maloy.  It was actually our first port in the Norweigan Fjords! It was absolutley stunning with breathtaking scenery, charming homes, and a serene setting.   This is a small, picturesque port that sees about three tourists a week – escept for our cruise ship. So there are not big souvenir shops or tourism infastructure. So I highly recommend taking a Disney Cruise line port adventure to explore the area.

We have lots more articles to help you plan a family cruise, explore Disney vacations, or enjoy a Disney cruise vacation! On our Norweigan Fjord cruise we also stopped at Bergen Norway, charming Alesund Norway,  and Rottedam Netherlands too!

Maloy Norway Overview

maloy norway things to do

There are various options to explore Maloy Norway! Pick something that looks fun for your particular family. I will point out that by getting to the city of Maloy by cruiseship you have already seen a fjord by cruise so that may be a little redundant and expensive. Unless you are a huge fisherman or boating enthusiast, I recommend a viewpoint port excursion so you can really see lots of the beauty of the region!

  • Personally we opted to do the Refvik Beach & Coastal Viewpoints port adventure with Disney to make sure we were back in time. To be honest, it was not my first choice – I wanted to see a fjord on a boat, but I’m so glad we did this tour. It was absolutely breathtaking and the other tour got cancelled because of Norway’s unpredictable weather.
  • Deep Sea Fishing
  • Kayaking
  • Maloy Viewpoint / Scenery
  • Rib Adventure
  • Scenic fjord cruise
  • Selja Monestery by boat
  • Nave Deer Farm
  • VÃ¥gsberget Trade Center
  • Taste of Maloy
  • Waterfall Hike

pretty maloy norway

The day started out overcast, cloudy, and rainy so I didn’t have high hopes for great vistas. But Norway has a way of surprising you with lots of different weather in one day. While many went off the ship in ponchos, they were greeted with picture-perfect weather within 20 minutes! So don’t dispair if the weather doesn’t look great. It will probably rain at some point during the day, but that doesn’t mean it will stick around all day! But do bring a poncho, rain coat, or umbrella to be safe!

We opted for the Refvik Beach & Coastal Viewpoints trip which was absolutely perfect and better than I expected. It was a short 2 hour excursion, but allowed us to see a lot of the amazing vistas in the area easily. I would book it again in a heartbeat!

We started out with a 30 minute drive in the bus. Norway buses are all very nice. It is also mandatory to wear your seatbelt or you as the person not wearing a seatbelt will be fined $140.  Although not extreme, if you are prone to motion sickness you may want to take dramamine before departing on this adventure as you will be driving along narrow roads between mountains.

Although the order of the stops will vary, we started driving through the beautiful mountains, green pastures, and dramatic clouds with dots of idyllic houses in between. Our drive pointed out the tractor eggs – bales of hay encased for animals to use during the winter.  They can be light green like we saw or white tractor eggs like we saw in other ports.

Next we stopped for 5 minutes to enjoy this dramatic view and get pictures. It truly was breathtaking!

Kråkenes area

Next we stopped at the  Kråkenes area, where the open Atlantic meets the rocky shoreline near the Stad peninsula.

Next we enjoyed the Kvalheim viewpoint where we saw the town of Måløy below, the backdrop of Hornelen mountain in the distance, and fjord landscapes stretching as far as you can see.

And honestly, the pictures never seem to do it justice! It was 10x prettier than even my best picture can capture!

Refvik Beach

Our last stop was the simple, beautiful Refvik Beach. The flat stretch of white sand is framed by rolling green hills and turquoise waters. We were told it is one of Norway’s most beautiful beaches.

It is very peaceful and you will enjoy just taking in the scenery for about 30 minutes. This is also the one and only restroom stop on the trip.

Sør-Vågsøy Church

We drove by a super cute white church in Måløy. I looked it up and found out it is the Sør-Vågsøy Church. This historic, wood-built church constructed in 1907 and seats about 600 people. It overlooks the water and Måløy Bridge.

Have you ever wondered why there are so many charming red homes in Norway? The reason is not to make the coutnryside look better. Norwegian houses are traditionally painted red because red pigment was historically the cheapest and most accessible option, mixed from local iron ochre and cod-liver oil. Citizens with money used expensive white paint containing zinc oxide to show off their status, leaving the red color for barns, workhouses, and fishermen’s cabins.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stop in Maloy! Our excursion was short, but perfect – and we feel like we saw everything well. While there are no tourist shops at the pier because it is such a small town that is not use to much tourism, we enjoyed the chance to get back on our Disney cruiseship and enjoy the stunning Norweigan Fjords all around us!   So whether you play a round of mini golf with the amazing scenery surrounding you, sit on deck with a coffee, or watch from yoru balony with a mickey ice cream bar – enjoy your day in this charming port!

I highly recommend you take the time to watch the ship go in and out of port as you will be sailing along various fjords in route and it is an excursion of it’s own -one that is included in your fare!
