Roatan cruise excursions
Let me get started telling you about the best roatan cruise excursions! We opted to book through the cruiseline to make sure if we got delayed we weren’t left behind. Plus if you watch for sales and deals you can book your shore excursions at a great discount. Just keep on eye on the cruise add on page. You can save up to 55%.
If you go with Royal they will tell you a time and a place to meet on the ship. When you check in they will give you a sticker to put on your shirt so they can easily identify you throughout the day. You will sit, probably in the theatre, until your group is called and then you will make your way off the ship, through the port, and to well organized lines of various local excursions. Once they have you grouped they will take your ticket (which was delivered to your stateroom) and you will board the bus for your exciting adventure holding monkeys!

You will make 3 stops: each is probably 30-45 minutes in length. As you drive your local guide will tell you about the Roatan and the stops you will make. The first stop is to see the monkeys and parrots.
They will give everyone a chance to hold a baby sloth monkey, starting with children, then women, and finally men. Basically they will hold the sloth by the nails and hang it on you – like a hanger – and you will support the sloth’s bottom. You will get a chance to take pictures with this adorable sloth. This interaction will take about 1 minute.

Next they will have you put your bags and any loose hats or sunglasses in a cubby before heading into the enclosures with the cappuchin moneys. If you don’t the monkeys will run off with your things. You will not pick up or pet the monkeys, rather they will explore their enclosure and you. They will feed them seeds which will encourage the cute, energetic monkeys to land on your head, shoulders, or arms. The guide was very intentional about making sure everyone had a chance to experience the little monkeys on them at least once, and everyone got a picture.
You can take pictures, selfies, or the local who is in the cage with you will try to get a picture for you with your camera.
It is silly and a little strange as the monkeys dig in your hair or leave dirt on your shoulders. They launch and hop from one person to the next. Make no mistake they are not tame and do not want to be pet.
The experience is super fun. We laughed and laughed during the experience and afterwards as we remember it and look at our pictures.
The interaction lasts 10-15 minutes.

Next they will take you into the macaw cages. Once again they will use seeds to encourage the beautiful birds to come closer. They may land on your shoulder, arms, or head.
This is truly a special activity we really enjoyed. This stop is quicker as the birds will poop out what they eat pretty quickly so after 5 minutes or so they move you along.
Again, you are welcome to take pictures and selfies and the local operator helped us take pictures with our cameras. They made sure everyone had a chance to have the bird pirch on them and get a picture before we left.

We were encouraged to wash our hands, leave a tip, and then whisked off to our vehicle to drive to the next stop – Iguanna.
I wasn’t really sure what to expect at this stop and therefore wasn’t really expecting anything amazing, but it was really cool. You will learn about the Iguana Farm and get introduced to the type of guests that call the farm home. Then you will get to feed the group with 2700 free roaming iguanas.
The iguanas will eagerly surround you as they look for a yumy bite of leafy greens.
You are welcome to pet the iguanas. Watch where you step as you take pictures as they are everywhere.
This was really fun and memorable. You will also make quick visits to see their fish, baby sea turtle, and tiny gift shop. This was really not that exciting. They did not take pictures for us, but as per usual they remined us we could leave a tip.

Finally, they will take you to learn about how they make chocolate on the island and allow you to sample some as well. They will let you know you can buy it and then allow you time to shop, taste, and visit the gift shops in the little shopping plaza. This was probably a 30 minute stop.
Finally you will load back up and drive back to the port. Once again you will be reminded that you can leave a tip and then they will walk you back through the port to where you can get back on the boat.
monkeys in honduras
So would I recommend this Roatan Monkey Sloth and Iguana excursion. Absolutely! It was a lot of fun and super memorable! I mean where else can you hold a sloth, Capuchin monkey, and macaw plus pet an iguana! The shore excursions was listed as 4 hours and that was about the time it took. It was a good length of time to get out and explore Honduras and try something new without being too long. There ws minimum walking involved.
Only downside, I didn’t enjoy being encouraged to tip 3 different places, but most guests just didn’t tip.
