The Disney World Fort Wilderness grounds are HUGE! It covers over 750 acres of lush woodland, this beautiful resort is like a hidden gem within the vastness of Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. There is an internal bus that takes you to the bus to go to the parks.
If you stay here, you stay here to enjoy camping with a side of theme parks. If your goal is to be at the parks open to close, I don’t recommend staying here. I would opt for another Disney World Hotel!
Fort Wilderness Cabins
The resort features a variety of accommodations, from charming Wilderness Cabins that come with kitchens and private patios to spacious campsites perfect for RVs or tents. The newly remodeled cabins look beautiful. These are a nice option for groups of 6, but they cost as much as some deluxe resorts with the drawbacks of the campground (more on that below.)

The campsites are a nice option if you are trying to save money at Disney World. Depending on the time of year, you can get a campsite for $77/night you will have space for a pop-up camper or a camper van-type vehicle, and up to 2 tents. You can pack 10 people in that space for the same cost. If you go during high season in December, spring break, or similar – the basic site with a picnic table and grill can cost up to $179/ night. For that cost you can have an air conditioned room at a value resort!

fort wilderness camper rental
We stayed at the resort on a long weekend stop in Orlando while heading down to Miami / Fort Lauderdale for a cruise. It was July so we needed air conditioning, no camping, and the cabins only fit 6 – not big enough for our family of 8. I was thrilled to find you can rent an RV to use at Disney Fort Wilderness. There are currently 4 companies that rent RV for guest staying at Disney World. They will bring your chosen RV, set it all up, and when you are done they will take care of packing it back up. Talk about convenient! I know this mama wasn’t confortable driving a large camping vehicle, but was so excited to get to offer my kids this unique experience in a beautiful resort!
Here are your options for rengint a camper at Disney World:
- Meacham’s RV Rental – (941) 224-4939
- Escape RV Rental – (407) 374-3657
- Kissimmee Orlando RV Rental – (407) 368-7899
- Ohana Camper Rental – (386) 748-9328

When we rented our RV in July 2024 there was only one choice, we used Meacham’s RV Rental. The process went very smoothly, the RV was super clean and well maintained, and we even had some fun extras like outdoor chairs, extension cord, and fan. My only thing with them was the wording when you leave. Basically you do not need to clean the camper, just clean up your family stuff.
disney world rv park
One of our favorite thing was how almost all the sites decorated! Sites would have large blow-ups decorating their campsite and golf cart. We’ve heard Christmas is even more amazing!
Golf Cart Rental at Fort Wilderness
You will find it difficult, and frustrating, to vacation at Disney World Fort Wilderness without a golf cart. It is just so large. It isn’t really set-up to drive your vehicle around except for your campsite and the main entrance bythe horse stables where you can grab the bus to the other parks. To visit the pool / drinks, boat launch to get to Magic Kingdom, Chip and Dale campfire, stores (there are 2), stables, and Trails End Restaurant you will need a golf cart, plan a 20+ minute walk in whatever the weather, or wait for the internal bus. In our experience the internal bus does not make rounds very often.
Besides the necessity, renting or bringing golf carts is so much fun! You can quickly and easily get anywhere you want to go to refill your mug, check out all the decked out rv sites, or take a swim. I suggest making reservations in advance as they do book up and run out. There are 4 and 6 passenger options.
You can recharge golf carts in the outlets at your site nightly. LOTS of people decorate their golf carts with floaties, clip on fans, clip on music, tinsel, etc. People really do go all out which makes it not only fun, but easier to spot your cart. Not only do they all look the same, but a cast member told me the keys work interchangeably – eek! There is plenty of parking for golf carts at all recreational, food, and transportation centers!

Trails End Restaurant
While there is the Hoop de Du Revue show, you need advanced tickets and it is not for everyday meals. There is also a snack shack by the pool with some quick bites. But for everyday meals, roll on over to this Old West diner where you can enjoy delicious bites morning, noon, and night! The rustic atmosphere is super charming and the food is spot on for the theme and your hungry family. You can grab pizza (which is a great value), a family meal of friend chicken and sides, pulled pork sandwich, bacon cheese burger, and more. For breakfast their are pastries as well as a breakfast pizza and specialty smore latte that is sure to satisfy. The air conditioned space is certainly welcome on those hot Florida days!

Campsites for sure need restrooms and showers, but we did in our camper too. I mean 8 people for one small bathroom was going to be a challenge. Almost every circle has a bathroom area with about 4 showers and 4 toilets for everyone to use.
disney campground
As you can see the resort is amazing, but there must be a reason I wouldn’t advice staying here if you are avid park goers. There are serveral drawbacks to this resort you should be aware of.
- Ice machines cost extra (not included like other resorts)
- No complimentary towels in showers or pool. While the bathroom wasn’t really surprising, I was taken aback that there were not towels by the pool. Getting your bath towels to dry outside, with the florida daily rainstorms let alone a bath and pool towel for all 8 of us was not just challenging, but impossible.
- The pool does have a water slide, but one pool for more than 1200 people is insane. It was crowded all the time. LIke you were pretty much standing body to body.
- If you buy a refillable cup you should know that the Ice machines are ALWAYS out of ice because people use the ice to refill personal cups and coolers. Hot soda is not delightful.
- No complimentary shampoo and soap in showers. This was surprising to me as their waterparks have this perk
- Because it is so large you really WILL need a golf cart. Again, it is fun, but an additional expense you should account for.
- Florida gets HOT! Even if you have an RV, it is hard for them to keep up with the heat. We found our newer model could realy only cool it by 20 degrees tops, so on days that topped 100 F, it would still be at least 80 which was so hot.
disney world campground reviews
So what’s the verdict? I think the campground is a really fun, unique Disney experience. If you love camping in a tent, RV, or cabin – this is a grea experience oozing with Disney charm and magic. You will have lots of ammenities considering it is a campground – pool with water slide, fireworks on the beach, rapid refill stations for beverages, complimentary games, restaurants, trails, Chip and Dale character sightings, legendary Disney service, and more. I would absolutely stay here again for a long weekend where we were mainly plannin on staying in the campsite, or just going mini golf, waterpark, or seasonal party.
I would not stay here if you are sun up to sun down park people. You won’t have a chance to enjoy the charm and see what makes this place so special. Instead you will be frsutrated with internal transportation of this large resort, the heat, lack of pool towels, paying for ice, etc.
